The Graduate Certificate of Nursing (Gerontics) offered by the School of Nursing has been specifically designed to assist registered nurses in the practice of caring for older clients across a broad variety of acute, post-acute and residential aged care clinical environments. The course also assists registered nurses who wish to research and further understand the phenomenon of the ageing process and health potential and deficits commonly associated with ageing.
Applicants would normally have a degree in nursing or a related discipline; registration with the Nurses Board of Victoria (Division 1 or be eligible for registration); and at least one year of nursing experience. Experience in the relevant area of practice is desirable.
The course consists of a number of specialised units, which will normally be completed over a period of one year. The course is offered by off-campus learning or by flexible mode (ie a combination of optional on-campus tutorials/seminars and off-campus learning modes). Successful completion of the course requires the study of the specialised units.*
* Units are currently under review - details of units to be available in 2004.
To satisfy the requirements of some unit assignments, it is expected that students will network with practitioners and agencies in the field of gerontic nursing. Students will be required to perform a health assessment on an older person in their clinical environment or in an area of nursing practice approved by the course coordinator.
Assessment includes assignments and an exam.
