Graduate Certificate in Aeromedical Retrieval

This course is offered by the Centre for Ambulance and Paramedic Studies. It is open to ambulance and MICA paramedics, nurses and doctors who are employees of public or private aeromedical retrieval providers or with an interest in aeromedical retrieval. Ambulance participants are required to be qualified ambulance or MICA paramedics with a minimum of 12 months post-bachelor/diploma qualification clinical experience, and currently employed by either Rural Ambulance Victoria, Metropolitan Ambulance Service or private providers of aeromedical retrieval services. Nurse participants are required to have current registration as Division 1 nurses or equivalent, with a minimum of 12 months post-registration experience. Doctor participants are required to be qualified with current full medical practitioner registration in Victoria or equivalent.

Graduates of the course will be able to:

• describe the role of the aeromedical retrieval services in Victoria and their interrelationships
• demonstrate the ability to adapt their clinical practice to the aeromedical retrieval environment, taking into consideration the effects of flight on susceptible medical, surgical and traumatic conditions
• demonstrate an ability to work effectively and safely as a member of an aeromedical retrieval flight team
• apply the principles of cultural awareness and sensitivity to caring for patients in the aeromedical retrieval environment, and
• demonstrate the appropriate professional attributes to enable them to work effectively as part of the aeromedical retrieval team and to promote the continued development of the practice of aeromedical retrieval.

Course structure

The course is offered on a part-time basis and is generally completed in 12 months. It comprises three core units and a single elective unit.

Core units

• PAR4201 Introduction to aeromedical retrieval
• PAR4202 Aeromedical retrieval - Clinical
• PAR4203 Aeromedical retrieval - Practicum

Elective units

• PAR4204 Aeromedical retrieval - Rescue
• PAR4205 Aeromedical retrieval project
• PAR4206 International aeromedical retrieval

Assessment

Assessment includes written assignments, practical exercises and examinations.
