Doctor of Juridical Science

The Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) is suited to those who wish to:

• pursue an academic career
• pursue a major academic study project such as a matter of law reform
• develop policy or theoretical perspectives in areas where they have recognised expertise.

To be eligible for admission, candidates require a Bachelor of Laws with first class or second class division A honours or a distinction (70 per cent) average in four coursework masters units (which then count towards the degree). During the course, candidates must complete:

• a thesis of no more than 50,000 words
• the SJD Seminar, a series of seminars on advanced legal research, and
• four coursework units from the Master of Laws program (a distinction average must be obtained to qualify for the award of the degree).

At the thesis stage, candidates are required to submit a completed thesis proposal form to research office. The prescribed proposal form is available from the executive officer, research administration, upon request.
On receipt of the completed thesis proposal form, the executive officer, research administration, will submit it to the Research Committee for approval of the topic and the appointment of a supervisor. In approving the research topic, the Research Committee has regard to the adequacy of the candidate's preparation for the research project and the facilities available in the faculty for the supervision and carrying out of the research.
The requirements which must be met with respect to the certification of theses prior to their submission for examination are set out in sections 47 and 48 of the faculty's regulations.
