This course is designed for full-time and part-time domestic
and international students who seek knowledge and abilities in the area of
business technology. It prepares students who already hold an undergraduate
degree for professional business uses of information technology. It is suitable
for graduates of a business degree who lack quantitative and computer skills,
and graduates of a technical degree who now wish to use their skills in a
business environment.
Students will gain a blend of information technology and business knowledge,
skills and attitudes. The course covers all the major areas of business
information technology in the context of a business environment. The teaching
methods are especially designed to lead to professionals in business and IT who
are able to identify and deploy the latest tools for solving business problems.
This outcome is regarded as essential given the rapidly changing technology
being used by business.
Candidates with a recognised bachelors degree or a relevant graduate diploma or a relevant honours degree will normally be admitted to the course. Limited places will be set to optimise class sizes; selection will be based on academic merit and may involve an interview.
The course structure consists of 12 units (72 points) of study, including eight compulsory units. Four elective units are chosen with the course director's approval, normally in information technology or business areas. The compulsory units are:
Students who have completed similar units in previous studies will normally be required to make substitutions. Credit will only be granted for postgraduate units that have not counted for the award of any other degree or diploma from any institution. Applicants who hold an honours degree in business systems from Monash University or Graduate Diploma in Business Systems from Monash University will normally be granted advanced standing equivalent to four units.
