Master of Business Systems

Course code: 2400 + Gippsland by off-campus learning + Hong Kong, and Singapore by off-campus learning + Course director: Dr Kai Ming Ting + Normally completed over three years of part-time study

The Master of Business Systems aims to provide an extended education and training in methods used in the design, development and applications of computer systems for the management of business operations. This involves the study of business-related computer techniques and business procedures leading to an understanding of the design, operation and control of computer systems. Applications include those in management, planning, scheduling, forecasting, production management, project management, financial management, business modelling, multimedia communications, electronic data interchange and other functional areas of business, industry and government.
This course is offered as a part-time off-campus learning course by the Gippsland School of Computing and Information Technology. It may be possible to transfer from the off-campus mode to the on-campus mode at Clayton.
Off-campus students need to make use of a personal computer and must have internet access. Students should consult with the course director to ensure computer compatibility with software used in the course.

Entry requirements

Graduates of an equivalent Australian bachelors degree will normally be admitted to the course.

Course structure

The course consists of 72 points (12 units of six points each) of coursework units.
(a) Core units:

• BUS9520 Business systems A (6 points)
• BUS9530 Business systems B (6 points)

(b) Six postgraduate electives (36 points) from the following list of off-campus learning units:

• GCO4802 Computer models for business decisions
• GCO4803 Inventory management systems
• GCO4805 Software systems design and development
• GCO4806 General operations management
• GCO4807 Business statistics and applications
• GCO4010 Research methods and reading in information technology
• GCO4015 Evolutionary and neural computing
• GCO4824 Data communications and networks
• GCO5801 Trading systems and electronic commerce
• GCO5802 Financial modelling
• GCO5803 Applied operations research
• GCO5804 Forecasting methods
• GCO5806 Internet commerce
• GCO5807 Project management
• GCO5816 Information technology management
• GCO5828 Applications of data mining

Students may select from the on-campus units of the School of Business Systems with permission of the course director.
(c) Two additional Faculty of Information Technology electives (12 points) - these must be level 4 or higher units offered on-campus or off-campus. Units outside the Gippsland School of Computing and Information Technology and the School of Business Systems may only be taken with permission of the course director and the school responsible for the unit.

(d) Two general electives (12 points) - these must be level 4 or higher units offered by any school within the university including the Faculty of Information Technology. Units outside the Gippsland School of Computing and Information Technology and the School of Business Systems may only be taken with permission of the course director and the school responsible for the unit.

Course completion requires:

• Completion of a total of 72 credit points, all at level 4 or above, that have not been used for the award of any other qualification including:
• Completion of BUS9520 Business systems A.
• Completion of BUS9530 Business systems B.
• A total of at least 48 credit points from the list of approved OCL units (given above) or, with the approval of the course director, taken from the School of Business Systems (including BUS9520 and BUS9530).
• A total of at least 24 credit points taken at level 5.
• A total of at least 60 credit points from the Faculty of Information Technology (including units from GSCIT and the School of Business Systems).
• At least 48 credit points must have been completed via off-campus learning study.
