Course code: 0103 + Clayton + Program director: Dr Peter Lawrence + Web address: http://www.bsys.monash.edu.au/ + Email address: bsinfo@infotech.monash.edu.au + Two semesters full-time study (part-time study is available to Australian residents)

The Graduate Diploma in Business Systems is offered by the School of Business Systems as both an entry-level award and as an exit award for students enrolled in the Master of Business Systems (Coursework) and Master of Business Systems Professional. The course comprises eight units taken from the Master of Business Systems (Coursework) program. The aim of the program is to provide education and training in methods used in the analysis, design, development and application of computer systems to the management of business operations. This involves the study of business-related techniques, practices and procedures in areas such as management, commercial, financial, health and industrial systems, leading to an understanding of the application of computer systems and information technology for business purposes.

Entry requirements

The normal entry requirement is a first degree that is recognised as equivalent to an Australian bachelors degree. Those expecting to complete their degrees in the current year may apply. Candidates without formal tertiary qualifications will enter via the Professional Certificate in Information Technology or Executive Certificate in Information Technology.

Accreditation

The Graduate Diploma of Business Systems degree meets the professional-level membership requirements of the Australian Computer Society.

Course structure

The course consists of eight units (48 credit points), including foundation studies in business systems analysis, design and implementation, complemented with various business systems elective studies. The structure is as follows:

  1. Core units:

  2. Four business systems postgraduate elective units (level 4 or above).

  3. One Faculty of Information Technology elective (including the School of Business Systems) - this must be a level 4 or higher unit offered by the Faculty of Information Technology. Units outside the School of Business Systems may only be taken with permission of the school responsible for the unit.

  4. One general elective - this must be a level 4 or higher unit offered by any school within the university including the Faculty of Information Technology and the School of Business Systems. Units outside the School of Business Systems may only be taken with permission of the school responsible for the unit.

* Offered on-campus and by off-campus learning.

Business systems postgraduate electives

Advanced standing

Generally, students who have completed similar units in previous studies will normally be required to make substitutions. Credit will only be granted for postgraduate units that have not counted for the award or any other degree or diploma. Where credit is granted, the number of elective units that can be taken outside of the School of Business Systems is reduced. Students who take out this award and then elect to return to the Master of Business Systems will only receive 24 credit points of advanced standing for the 48 credit points used to obtain the Graduate Diploma.
