The Postgraduate Certificate of Education (Teaching Languages Other Than English) [LOTE] is designed for teachers who wish to upgrade their qualifications to include the ability to teach a LOTE.
Candidates will usually hold an approved degree or equivalent
qualification from a recognised tertiary institution or an approved post-Year
12 major (or approved equivalent) in a language other than English, have
demonstrated proficiency in the language and hold a recognised teaching
qualification. Prior to enrolment, all students must have their proposed course
approved by the LOTE program coordinator.
Note that teachers who wish to upgrade their qualifications to be
eligible for a teaching position in their LOTE need to have completed the
language requirement prior to entering the course.
The course consists of 24 credit points of study. Students will complete two 12-point units from the following list:
* EDF6224 is mandatory for those teachers wishing to be fully qualified for employment with the Victorian Institute of Teaching. Qualified LOTE teachers must choose another postgraduate unit relevant to their course as approved by the course coordinator.

Candidates who successfully complete the Postgraduate Certificate of Education (LOTE) may complete a postgraduate diploma or a masters degree by undertaking a further two or four units respectively.
The Postgraduate Certificate of Education (LOTE) requires a minimum of at least one semester of full-time study and no more than two years of part-time study. Each of the units is one semester in length. The expected number of hours per week for a part-time student is 24.
