Synopsis

The course seeks to develop students' skills in translation to and from English and another language, and their awareness of practical and theoretical approaches to translation and translation studies. The main languages available are Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish, and other languages depending on student numbers. Students will be given a foundation in theories of translation and will also receive training in research on translation studies. An introduction to the field of translation studies is supplemented by a translation project and elective units that offer a wide range of choices, thus enabling students to work on topics tailored to their interests, whether they be vocational or theoretical/literary. Electives include a unit that focuses on the work of the professional translator.

Entry requirements

The minimum requirement for entry is a bachelors degree with a major in a language. The level should be at least equivalent of three years post-VCE study. Where English is the foreign language, the student is required to have a TOEFL score of 600 or IELTS of 7, and a score of at least 5 in TWE. For local applicants, professional experience in translation may be a substitute for a bachelors degree. Such candidates will present (a) two professional referees which comment on the nature and extent of the experience; (b) a full CV and (c) a statement of up to 1000 words including the applicant's career objectives and reasons for applying for entry. International students must hold the equivalent of a bachelors degree.

Course structure

Students undertake units to the value of 48 points at fourth-year level, as follows:

Core units

• TRN4030 Introduction to translation studies (12 points) (semester one)

and

• TRN4201 Major translation project (24 points) (normally a full-year unit but may be taken in either semester with the permission of the coordinator)

or

• TRN4202 Minor translation project (12 points) (semester one or two)

Note: TRN4030 would normally be a prerequisite for TRN4201 and TRN4202 but may be taken concurrently with TRN4201 or TRN4202 with the permission of the course coordinator.

Electives

Electives to the value of 12 or 24 points are to be chosen from the following:

• TRN4100 The business of translation (6 points) (semester two)
• TRN4020 Directed reading (6 points) (semester one or two)
• Six or 12 points of language study (existing fourth-year level units in the languages listed above; these may include JIT4200, JIT4832, JIT4843).
• Other fourth year units (eg a cognate unit in linguistics or, for students interested in literary translation, a literature unit offered within the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics, or a CLS unit in literary theory and practice) with the approval of the coordinator.
