Students will gain a critical understanding of theoretical and practical issues relating to applied linguistics, including second/foreign language acquisition, language teaching, language contact and intercultural communication.
The course is normally undertaken in one-and-a-half years of full-time or three years of part-time study.
Applicants should hold (a) a bachelors degree with at least a credit average in the final year, or (b) a bachelors pass degree with demonstrable professional experience at a senior level in a relevant area (Such applicants will need to supply a CV, a 1000-word statement and the names of two professional referees).
The course consists of six 12-point units, with three core units and three electives. Students undertake units to the value of 24 points at fourth-year level in their first semester of enrolment, followed by another 24 points at either fourth or fifth-year level in the second semester. In the final semester, students take 24 points at fifth-year level. There are three compulsory core units. Remaining units are selected from the set of electives. Students can enter the program in the first or second semester. The course may also be taken part-time.
Alternative electives may be approved on an individual basis.
To graduate with the Master of Applied Linguistics, students must gain a credit in core units and a credit average overall.
