The course encourages students to build on theoretical studies investigating the ways in which the environmental problem as a whole has established itself. They may also extend their insights as they see fit from a university-wide selection of electives. A team-based interdisciplinary research project is also offered for integration with coursework. The course is designed for students seeking a course that broadens and deepens their existing knowledge base; enables participation in a team-based, interdisciplinary research project; enables application of prior disciplinary training in a research project; and facilitates understanding of the politics or social construction of environmental understanding. The length of the course is one year full-time or two years part-time.
Candidates should possess a three-year degree and the Graduate Diploma of Environmental Science with at least a credit average or an honours degree in any discipline with a grade of H2B, or equivalent.
Students complete 48 points including core unit ENV506C and 30 points of additional units chosen from the elective and foundation units listed below and approved by the course coordinator.
Candidates who have not completed the equivalent to the Graduate Diploma of
Environmental Science from Monash University may be required to complete two
additional core units: ENV501C and ENV503C.
Note that to complement prior studies and to assist in completion of the
proposed research sequence, candidates without the appropriate background may,
after consultation with academic staff, be required to undertake one or more
foundation units.
