Master of Applied Social Research
(1.5year program)

Synopsis

This postgraduate course, offered full-time over 18 months or part-time over three years, provides training in theoretical and practical skills about the processes involved in social research. It is specifically designed for people who will design, conduct and evaluate various social research projects. It is also intended to extend the skills of policy administrators who analyse research reports, formulate commissioned research projects and work together with staff researchers and/or outside consultants.

Entry requirements

A bachelors degree in sociology or any cognate discipline with at least a credit average in the final year; or a three-year bachelors degree with demonstrable professional experience at a senior level in a relevant area (such applicants will need to supply a CV, a 1000-word statement and the names of two professional referees); a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Social Research.

Exit points

After successful completion of 24 points, students may apply to exit the program with a Graduate Certificate of Arts, or after successful completion of 48 points, including the core level four units listed below, with a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Social Research.

Course structure

Students undertake units to the value of 48 points at level 4 and 24 points at level 5 to complete a total of 72 points.

Level 4 units

Or approved 12-point level 4 elective chosen from the faculties of Arts, Business and Economics, or Information Technology

Level 5 units

Or approved 12-point level 5 elective chosen from the Faculties of Arts, Business and Economics, or Information Technology

Minimum pass grade

To graduate with the Master of Applied Social Research, students must gain a credit in core units and a credit average overall.
