Masters qualifying programs

The masters qualifying programs are designed for students who have a bachelors degree and require a preliminary year before proceeding to further study at fifth-year level. Two kinds of programs are offered: masters qualifying with a research component and masters qualifying by coursework. Both programs are undertaken in one year of full-time or two years of part-time study. All students undertake units to the value of 48 points at level four.

Students should note that it is not possible to graduate with the award of `masters qualifying'. Masters qualifying by coursework programs are usually identical in content to a graduate/postgraduate diploma program in the same discipline and lead into 48 point masters by coursework programs. Masters qualifying with a research component programs are similar to honours degree programs and are intended for students wishing to proceed to masters by research degrees or the PhD. See individual discipline entries for details of programs offered. For further information on research disciplines, see the `Research programs' entry.
Students undertaking a masters qualifying program (MQual), either with a research component or by coursework, must obtain at least a credit average (60 C) in order to have satisfactorily completed the program. A weighted average will be used in the calculation, ie the mark for each unit will be considered relative to its points. Marks for units for which advanced standing (credit) has been granted will not be taken into consideration in the calculation.
In some programs, a minimum grade of credit (60 C) may be required for some or all of the core units. Refer to the individual programs listed under each discipline.
Students undertaking the masters qualifying with a research component must obtain a distinction result in the research project and a distinction average overall to be eligible to proceed to a research degree. Students who have completed the masters qualifying but are unable to proceed to further studies may apply to exit with the relevant graduate (or postgraduate) diploma.

Entry requirements

The minimum entry requirement into the masters qualifying programs is a credit average in the third part of the major sequence or in the final year of a bachelors degree. Some programs may require students to have achieved distinction average grades - refer to the entry requirements for individual programs. Students intending to apply should contact the relevant school.
