Master of Arts in Asian Studies by coursework and research

Course code: 2846 + Course fees: local students - RTS HECS-exempt places available + Coordinator: Ross Mouer

This program, which normally requires one-and-a-half years of full-time study or three years part-time, will enable students to focus their studies around a research thesis on Asia. The coursework component is designed to encourage interdisciplinary perspectives to broaden and deepen the understanding of Asia and Australia-Asia relations, thereby providing a fuller appreciation of the context in which the research project will be conceptualised.

Entry requirements

Applicants who have completed an honours degree with a grade of H2A or above, or a recognised masters qualifying program with a research component with a distinction average grade or above, and a grade of distinction or above for the research component, may be admitted to the MA in Asian studies by a combination of coursework and research. Previous study of an Asian language at university level is normally assumed.

Course structure

Candidates are required to complete the following two units for a total of 24-points of coursework plus a 66 per cent thesis of 20,000 to 25,000 words.

The thesis topic must be determined in consultation with the supervisor, who is to be selected in consultation with the graduate coordinator.
Applicants for this program are required to submit a 1000-word research proposal and are accepted into this program, subject to there being a suitable member of staff willing to supervise the proposed research.

External candidature

Candidates will normally be required to enrol on the Clayton campus for all of the units in the coursework component and then to apply for transfer to external candidature.

Minimum pass grade

The minimum pass grade for units in Master of Arts research programs is 60C, ie a grade of credit or above is required in every unit and for the thesis.
