This course prepares registered nurses for entry to specialty practice in gerontological nursing. It is designed to support the practice of caring for the older person across a broad range of clinical settings. The course develops an understanding of the ageing process, the health and wellness potential as well as the health problems commonly associated with the phenomena of growing older.
Applicants would normally have relevant registration (eg Division 1 with the Nurses Board of Victoria), with at least one year of nursing experience, and have a degree in nursing or a related discipline. Experience in the relevant area of practice is desirable.
The Graduate Certificate course consists of two, 12 credit point units. The course will normally be completed part time over one year. The course is offered by off-campus learning or by flexible mode (ie a combination of on-campus and off-campus learning teaching methods). Successful completion of the course requires the study of the following two core units:
Please note that to satisfy the requirements of unit assignments, it is expected that students will network with practitioners and agencies in the field of gerontic nursing. Students need to develop an understanding of all areas of aged care, and should negotiate with other facilities and agencies to spend at least one day in a variety of settings, eg nursing homes and hostels, ACAT team, community option/linkages packages, and domiciliary care teams.
Assessment includes assignments and computer assessment.
