Master of Transport

Course code: 2862 + Clayton campus + Full-fee-paying course + Cost: Australian students - TBA ($1350 per six-credit-point unit in 2003; international students - $1500 per six-credit-point unit)

Aims

The masters course is a response to the growing need for engineers with broad awareness of the characteristics and significance of transport, including its technological, economic, environmental and social impact. The course requires students to complete 48 credit points, which equates to eight units. Seven units are specified as core, with the electives drawn from other transport and traffic units, infrastructure engineering and management units or units in the Master of Business Systems course. This will enable the course to meet the educational needs of practising engineers who are seeking to extend their technical knowledge while enhancing their management skills through better understanding of project management and operations research.

Professional recognition

The course satisfies the continuing education requirements of the Institution of Engineers, Australia.

Entry requirements

Participants will have a four-year degree in civil engineering, a four-year honours degree in science or applied science or a three-year degree with appropriate postgraduate qualifications.

Course length

The course is normally completed part-time over two years (based on two units per semester). It may be accelerated to a 12-month full-time course.

Course structure

The course is equivalent to 1.0 EFTSU or 48 credit points. Where appropriate, students will be encouraged to enrol in the Graduate Certificate of Transport and then articulate to the masters.

Core units (all six credit points)

Electives (all six credit points)

The following units offered by off-campus learning as part of the Master of Business Systems through the Gippsland campus are also offered as electives:

Advanced standing for previous study

Subject to individual assessment, credit may be granted for up to 50 per cent of the total course on the basis of work of equivalent standard successfully completed at another institution and up to 25 per cent for work completed outside the Engineering faculty at Monash University but which has not formed part of the work presented for any other degree.

Resource requirements

Off-campus learning material in the form of study guides and CD-ROMs will be made available to all students. Prescribed textbooks will be available from the university bookshop. Students will require access to a computer with email and internet access, either at home or via commercial access points or facilities at local libraries etc.
