Course code: 0010 + Clayton campus + HECS fees applicable + International students: $15,500 pa (full-time) or $7750 pa (part-time) + Stream: Applied Linguistics + This program is currently offered only in off-campus learning mode (except for ALM4150 if taken on campus)
The Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics deals with applications of linguistics to professional and social contexts in which language plays a crucial role. Present offerings are particularly suited to teachers of English as a mother tongue, as a second or foreign language, to teachers of languages other than English, to generalist primary school teachers, to language advisers, language consultants, and those concerned with multicultural and language policies. People working in the media (advertising/journalism), in business/industry as well as in the service professions (health, law, social work) would also find this course useful as some units deal with applications of linguistics relevant to the media, the workplace and the professions.
Applicants should hold at least a pass bachelors degree with a major sequence in linguistics or a major sequence in English or another language. Applicants with a bachelors degree from a different discipline and with extensive experience in language-related teaching, translating/interpreting or journalism may also be considered.
At present, the only special requirement is that students will need access to an audiotape playback facility. However, we are increasingly moving into multimedia teaching, and it is highly recommended that students acquire email accessibility.
The program is normally undertaken over one year full-time or two years part-time. The diploma program consists of four core units:
Successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics with a credit average allows students to progress to the Master of Applied Linguistics by coursework.
There are no examinations in this program. All units consist of continuous assessment, which may include a take-home test.
Exemptions (with or without credit) may be granted for comparable units completed elsewhere or at a previous time. Students who have completed relevant units at fourth-year (postgraduate) level may apply for a maximum of 24 points of advanced standing. Credits cannot be obtained for units that were part of a course for which a degree or an award of any kind has been taken out. No student may obtain more than 24 points of credit in total. Where an exemption is granted without credit (usually for a similar unit completed at upper undergraduate level), a suitable fifth year (MA) unit will be taken in lieu (but may not be repeated if the student later progresses to the Master of Applied Linguistics).
