Diploma of Biotechnology (Research and Management)

Course code: 3501 + Clayton or Gippsland campuses

The Diploma in Biotechnology (Research and Management) is normally taken over two years part-time study, concurrently with a bachelors degree.

The course is designed for students enrolled concurrently in a bachelors degree who wish to undertake a third major sequence in biotechnology (in addition to the major sequences allowed in their degree course) to prepare them especially well for a career in biotechnology research or management. A combination of credit transfer (up to 24 points), overload and summer units allows students to complete the diploma at the same time as their bachelors degree or within an extra semester depending on the time of entry to the course.
The course structure is identical to the major sequence in biotechnology for the BSc program. The regulations of the Faculty of Science currently allow students to overload their semester unit enrolment by six points without special approval (at second and third year only). Students from other faculties wishing to enrol in this course are required to seek prior approval from the faculty administering their degree course.

Course requirements

The undergraduate Diploma of Biotechnology (Research and Management) consists of 48 points of studies in total, including 24 points of core units split equally over levels two and three, and 24 points of electives. At least 12 points of elective study must be selected from the level-three units specified in the biotechnology entry under `Science areas of study and sequences offered'.

The course does not include level-one units but allows entry to students who have achieved at least a distinction grade in one of the following units: BIO1022, CHM1022, BMS1011, BIO1626, BIO1722 or CHM1639.
