Course abbreviation: BSc/BE
The faculties of Engineering and Science offer a five-year double-degree course which qualifies students for the degrees of Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Engineering. This double-degree program is available to students in the departments of Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and the School of Physics and Materials Engineering. The double degree is awarded on completion of a total of 240 points. Students may graduate with a BSc following the completion of an approved combination of at least 144 points of science and engineering units, including all of the normal science requirements for that branch of the BSc/BE, with at least 96 points of science units. The Bachelor of Engineering degree is awarded on completion of 192 points, of which at least 108 to 132 points are completed in engineering units depending on the chosen branch, in accordance with the BSc/BE course list. Admission to the course is subject to the approval of both faculties. In the double-degree course structure, restrictions have been imposed in terms of prescribed units to ensure that students pursue studies that suitably equip them for the subsequent years in science and engineering.
Students in all engineering branches may pursue a major sequence in
astrophysics, mathematics, physics or computer science. There are additional
sequences of science units offered in some streams, including physiology
(leading to biomedical engineering in the Electrical and Computer Systems
Engineering department, rehabilitation engineering in the Mechanical
Engineering department, and biomaterials engineering in the Materials
Engineering school), atmospheric science, biochemistry, geosciences, chemistry,
materials science, chemistry and microbiology in chemical engineering, and
geosciences, atmospheric science, biology/ ecology and materials science in the
Civil Engineering department. In order to pursue a particular sequence,
students must take the necessary prerequisites in their first year of study.
Details of major and minor sequences in Science disciplines are described in
the `Science' section of this handbook. In some special cases, students may
need to overload at stages 2 or 3 if they have not completed all of the
prerequisites for their chosen science major sequences.
Students in the double degree must complete either two major sequences in
different science disciplines or a double major and a minor sequence in a
different science discipline. If they wish to apply for entry to honours in
science during the double-degree course, they must have completed at least 144
points of studies, including all of the normal science requirements for that
branch of the BSc/BE, with at least 96 points of science units and a major
sequence in the relevant science discipline.
The requirements for all stages of the double-degree course may be found in the
course list after this section of the handbook. Students who first enrolled in
the BSc/BE prior to 1999 and who have not completed all of the course
requirements for stages 1 to 4 should consult with the Science and Engineering
course advisers.
The BSc/BE double-degree program commences at level 1 and is normally of
five-years full-time duration. Entry to the course is only through the
Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC). No mid-year entry will be permitted.
