The Bachelor of Performing Arts (BPA) is available to students who wish to prepare themselves for careers in the performing arts and related areas. The course provides a balance of practical, theoretical, critical and contextual studies. Students will be involved in cooperative productions working in two or more performing art forms, eg in music theatre or dance- drama productions and sound sculpture exhibitions. The BPA has a greater concentration on practical, creative and performing arts courses than is customary in the program for the Bachelor of Arts and takes a broader approach across the arts than the more specialised music units leading to the Bachelor of Music. Students undertaking the BPA degree will also complete interdisciplinary studies (involving participation in a multimedia performance project) and in the history, nature and analysis of the arts.
Please refer to `Entry requirements' under `Arts regulations and definitions' earlier in this section. For admission into the music major, a standard of at least Grade 7 Australian Music Education Board or Associated Board of the Royal School of Music (Performance) or equivalent is required. In addition to applying through VTAC, applicants may need to undertake an interview/audition.
Students must complete 144 points including at least 102 performing arts points (drawn from PER units and the four performing arts disciplines listed below).
Performing arts majors and minors are available in drama and theatre
studies, music and visual culture*. A minor in dance is also available. The
primary major in the degree is in drama and theatre studies; students need to
obtain approval in order to study a major in music or visual culture.
* Within the discipline of visual culture, students may choose units with an
emphasis on film and television. However, students may not undertake a major
and a minor in the visual culture/film and television combination.
Students undertake a three-year program comprising:
(a) a performing arts major (48 points)
(b) a performance studies sequence (36 points)
(c) a minor (24 points)
(d) a minimum of 36 points at third-year level
(e) a total of 144 points.
Note that a standard major is 48 points. For a music performance major,
students must complete 54 points of core units including a first-year-level
sequence (12 points), 18 points of second-year-level studies and 24 points of
third-year-level studies.
In exceptional circumstances, students may choose to take their minor sequence in a discipline taught by another arts school or another faculty. Students should contact the coordinator of the degree for details and permission.
