Course code: 1712 + Gippsland, off-campus learning
The Bachelor of Arts (Psychology and Humanities) gives students opportunities to develop an understanding of psychology as a scientific discipline and to appreciate the role it plays within society as a whole. The construction of major and minor sequences enables students to undertake specialised studies in humanities and social sciences in other disciplines to complete their learning in psychology.
The major sequence in psychology is a common program offered on the Caulfield, Clayton and Gippsland campuses by the Department of Psychology. The Australian Psychological Society (APS)-accredited major comprises 10 six-point units: nine core units and one elective unit. Some third-level electives may be undertaken in second year, providing prerequisites and corequisites are met.
Refer to `Entry requirements' under `Arts regulations and definitions' earlier in this section.
A candidate for the degree must fulfil the following requirements
to receive the award of the Bachelor of Arts (Psychology and Humanities):
(a) a psychology major (54 points)
(b) an arts major (48 points)
(c) two additional first-year-level arts sequences (24 points)
(d) a further 12 points of arts (first, second or third-year level)
(e) a minimum of 48 points and a maximum of 60 points at first-year level
(f) a minimum of 36 points at third-year level
(g) a total of 144 points.
Note that the course structure has six `free' points (one unit); this unit can
be used by students who wish to complete requirements for registration with the
Australian Psychological Society (APS), or students can choose to take a unit
in another arts discipline. Unit details for the psychology major sequence can
be found under `Units from other faculties recognised as arts units -
Psychology' earlier in this section.
The arts major may be chosen from Australian Indigenous studies, Australian studies, community studies, history-politics, Indonesian, journalism, mass communications, public relations (subject to approval), sociology or writing (details on each discipline are provided under the entry for the School of Humanities, Communications and Social Sciences).
For information on majors and minors offered, students should refer the `Areas of study' section on the faculty website at http://www.arts.monash.edu.au/ current/coursework/study_areas/index.html.
