The Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Art and Design offer a double-degree course which qualifies student for the degrees of Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Design (Industrial Design). The program was established to enable creative students to pursue their interests in both engineering design and industrial design, with a focus on high-technology consumer product design. With a continuing international trend to accelerated product development, facilitated by new interdisciplinary group techniques such as `concurrent engineering', there is a growing need for graduates with multidisciplinary skills and an ability to communicate with professionals from other disciplines: this course is intended to address that need.
There is a common technological core for both the BE (four years) and the BDes(Industrial Design) (three years) courses offered at Monash University.
The amalgamation of the common cores means that the five-year double-degree course still achieves the principal objectives of both courses. Consequently, graduates will be able to synthesise advanced technology and consumer product design in the creation of new products and will be able to facilitate cooperation in new product development teams by being sensitive to the different professional viewpoints of the team members.
The BE/BDes(IndDes) double-degree program commences at level 1 and is of five years duration, if taken full-time. Entry is through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC), although transfer applications after one year of BE studies will be considered on their merits.
The course operates on-campus at Clayton (Engineering) and Caulfield (Industrial Design), but is structured to allow whole days at one or the other campus. The course structure is set out in the Faculty of Engineering's section of the handbook.
