Introduction

The Victorian College of Pharmacy, a faculty of Monash University since 1992, has a proud record of education and research in the pharmaceutical sciences dating back to its establishment in 1881. It is one of the leading schools of pharmacy in Australia, offering professional qualifications and further education for the pharmacy profession, undergraduate programs in formulation science and medicinal chemistry and research higher degrees.

The college is located on its own campus at Parkville, where it benefits from proximity to other leading research organisations in the `Parkville strip'. It has strong links with the national and international pharmaceutical industry and health research community as well as with professional associations such as the Pharmacy Board of Victoria and the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (Victorian Branch), which are located on the campus.
The college has become a world-renowned specialist centre in drug discovery and development: the first Australian commercially successful drug for the global market, Relenza(TM), was developed at the college. In 2002, a new Centre for Pre-Clinical Drug Candidate Optimisation further expands the College as a resource for industry.
There are four departments within the college: Pharmaceutics, Pharmacy Practice, Medicinal Chemistry, and Pharmaceutical Biology and Pharmacology, each headed by internationally recognised research professors. The administration is managed through the Office of the Dean and includes the recently established VCP Foundation.
