The Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences offers a Master of Biomedical Science (MBioMedSc) program for students enthusiastic about undertaking postgraduate research in biomedical sciences. The MBioMedSc is a research degree for which candidates are required to submit a major thesis for examination. The thesis should embody the results of an investigation carried out by the candidate, under supervision, which show independence of thought and which demonstrates the candidate's ability to carry out research in that discipline.
Designed for students who do not have the equivalent of a class I or class IIA honours degree in a relevant discipline. For graduates with only a pass degree in a relevant field, and who have not attempted honours in that field, admission to MBioMedSc (part 1) will normally require at least a credit grade average in 24 points of relevant third-year units, or appropriate additional training and experience. Candidates must complete the MBioMedSc (part 1) program and obtain results equivalent to HIIA or better for admission into MBioMedSc (part 2).
Students with a class I or class IIA honours degree in a relevant discipline or students who have completed an MBioMedSc (Part 1) with results equivalent to HIIA or better may enrol directly in MBioMedSc (part 2). A candidate may be admitted to MBioMedSc (part 2) candidature on a probationary basis which will be reviewed after six months of candidature by the faculty board.
In exceptional circumstances, a student who does not meet these entry requirements may be allowed to enrol directly into MBioMedSc (part 2) if he/she has demonstrated an ability to undertake research at masters level (eg by producing evidence of research experience and/or relevant work experience). In recommending such a candidate, the head of department should be satisfied that the applicant will not require an undue amount of supervision.
