Master of Information Management and Systems (Research)

Course code: 2617 + Caulfield campus + Course director: Dr Linda Dawson

Introduction

The Master of Information Management and Systems (Research) (MIMS (Res)) is offered by the School of Information Management and Systems. The program aims to prepare students for professional and academic careers in the field of information management and systems research and practice. It will provide students with the skills needed to conduct research projects in the field related to information products, processes, services and systems within and between organisations.

A Master of Information Management and Systems by coursework is also available.

Entry requirements

Entry to the MIMS (Research) will require completion of an honours degree with a grade of at least second class honours.

Applicants who do not meet this requirement may gain entry to the MIMS (Res) after the completion of an approved preliminary program at second class honours standard.

Course structure

The MIMS (Res) can be studied in two ways: (1) 100 per cent research, and (2) by a combination of coursework and research. The coursework component can be up to 12 points of fifth-year units from the School of Information Management and Systems. The choice of units must be approved by the head of school.

Each candidate is required to undertake supervised research in an area of information management and systems resulting in the completion of a major thesis. A principal and an associate supervisor will be appointed and the candidate is required to maintain regular contact with the supervisors. Candidates are required to attend and contribute to the school research-in- progress seminar series.
The thesis will be examined by two examiners, one external to Monash. The overall result for the degree will be determined by combining the examiners' grades and the results of any coursework units that have been approved for MIMS (Res) study.
