Master of Business Systems (Coursework)

General information

Course code: 2398 + Clayton campus + Program director: Dr Peter Lawrence + Web address: http://www.bsys.monash.edu.au + Email address: bsinfo@infotech.monash.edu.au + Three semesters of full-time study (part-time study is available to Australian residents)

The Master of Business Systems by coursework is offered by the School of Business Systems. The program aims to provide education and training in methods used in the analysis, design, development and application of computer systems to the management of business operations. This involves the study of business-related techniques, practices and procedures in areas such as management, commercial, financial, health and industrial systems, leading to an understanding of the application of computer systems and information technology for business purposes.

Entry requirements

Entrance normally requires a first degree that is recognised as equivalent to an Australian bachelors degree. Those expecting to complete their degrees in the current year may apply.

Accreditation

The Master of Business Systems degree meets the professional-level membership requirements of the Australian Computer Society.

Course structure

The course consists of 12 units (72 credit points), two core units and 10 electives. Core units include computer literacy and numeracy components, complemented with studies in business systems. Students may select units from any area of business systems. Students who have completed a total of eight appropriate units (48 credit points) but who do not wish to complete the masters program may elect to exit with the Graduate Diploma of Business Systems (see earlier entry under Graduate Diploma of Business Systems).

Elective units are units chosen by the student. Elective units will normally be selected from units offered by the School of Business Systems, however two electives may be chosen from postgraduate units offered by any other school in the Faculty of Information Technology, and two may be chosen from postgraduate units offered by any school within Monash University. Units chosen from outside the School of Business Systems may only be taken with permission from the school/department responsible for the unit in question.

Students are also required to complete FIT9001 Masters Transition Program. The requirement to complete FIT9001 is only applicable to on-campus students. FIT9001 is a '0' point unit studied over four weeks (weeks 3-6) through four 2 hour workshops. This unit must be completed before students can enrol into their second semester of study.

Advanced standing (credit provision)

Generally, students who have completed similar units in previous studies will normally be required to make substitutions. Credit will only be granted for postgraduate units that have not counted for the award of any other degree or diploma. Where credit is granted, the number of the elective units that can be taken outside the School of Business Systems is reduced.

Applicants who hold an honours degree in business systems from Monash University or Graduate Diploma in Business Systems from Monash University will normally be granted advanced standing equivalent to four units.
Students who have completed studies substantially equivalent to BUS9520 (Business systems) may chose to apply for a substitution, in which case they will be permitted to take another business systems elective in its place. Students are required to prove to the satisfaction of the course director that they have completed equivalent study and must formally apply for this substitution using the Faculty of Information Technology credit transfer form.
