Course code: 0103 + Clayton campus + Program director: Dr Peter Lawrence + Web address: http://www.bs.monash.edu.au + Email address: bsinfo@infotech.monash.edu.au + Two semesters full-time study (part- time study is available to Australian residents)

The Graduate Diploma in Business Systems is offered by the School of Business Systems. This is an exit award for students enrolled in the Master of Business Systems. The course comprises eight units taken from the Master of Business Systems program. The aim of the program is to provide education and training in methods used in the analysis, design, development and application of computer systems to the management of business operations. This involves the study of business-related techniques, practices and procedures in areas such as management, commercial, financial, health and industrial systems, leading to an understanding of the application of computer systems and information technology for business purposes.

Entry requirements

Entrance normally requires a first degree that is recognised as equivalent to an Australian bachelors degree. Those expecting to complete their degrees in the current year may apply.

Accreditation

The Graduate Diploma of Business Systems degree meets the professional- level membership requirements of the Australian Computer Society.

Course structure

The course consists of eight units (48 credit points), which include computer literacy and numeracy components complemented with various business systems elective studies. In later units, there is some scope to work with an individual staff member and specialise in an area such as management, commercial, financial, health and industrial systems.

Elective units are chosen by the student. Students must complete at least six units (36 credit points) from units offered by the School of Business Systems and at least seven units (42 credit points) from units offered by the Faculty of Information Technology. One elective unit may be drawn from any postgraduate program of the university with the approval of the relevant teaching department and the head of the School of Business Systems or nominee.

Advanced standing (credit provision)

Generally, students who have completed similar units in previous studies will normally be required to make substitutions. Credit will only be granted for postgraduate units that have not counted for the award or any other degree or diploma. Where credit is granted, the number of elective units that can be taken outside of the School of Business Systems is reduced. Students who take out this award and then elect to return to the Master of Business Systems will only receive 24 credit points of advanced standing for the 48 credit points used to obtain the Graduate Diploma.

Students who have completed studies substantially equivalent to BUS9520 (Business systems A) may choose to apply for a substitution, in which case they will be permitted to take another Business Systems elective in its place. Students are required to prove to the satisfaction of the course Director, that they have completed equivalent study and must formally apply for this substutution using the Faculty of Information Technology credit transfer form.
