Master of Education degrees


The faculty offers a wide range of pathways in the Master of Education degree by coursework, either by direct enrolment at masters level or via postgraduate certificates and postgraduate diplomas which fully articulate into the masters program. Students may undertake a general course or concentrate on one of a number of pathways. As a general rule, each consists of two compulsory core units and a combination of units chosen from a nominated list, units chosen from other specialist pathways, units undertaken in other faculties, and project work.

In some courses where registration or employment requirements are involved, additional units may be specified.

Admission requirements

In general terms, to be eligible for admission to the Master of Education degree, applicants must hold either an approved three-year bachelors degree and an approved fourth year of study, or an approved four-year bachelors degree, or have qualifications or experience considered by the faculty board to be equivalent to, or a satisfactory substitute for, the above awards.

Course outline

Students may complete the Master of Education by coursework degree by one of three options:

Research thesis

The research core unit is a corequisite for the research thesis. It may be taken concurrently with the research thesis or completed prior to the commencement of the research thesis.

Pathways

Where students undertake a series of units that meet the requirements of an approved pathway, this pathway will be shown on their testamur.

Eligibility for doctoral-level studies

Candidates who wish to proceed to doctoral-level studies (PhD or EdD) must meet the entrance requirements by having completed research at honours or masters level. To be eligible for doctoral-level studies, Master of Education candidates must complete a research thesis, ie option 3. They must achieve a grade of distinction or above for the thesis and an average of distinction or above in their coursework units.

Length of course/workload required

The MEd by coursework may be taken either full-time or part-time. It is expected that full-time candidates will complete all requirements within 18 months (three semesters) while part-time candidates should complete all requirements within three years. The expected number of study hours per week for a full-time student is 48.

Flexible learning

Units within the Master of Education by coursework are offered in various flexible learning modes. These may include units offered via summer school, winter school, through on-campus and off-campus modes. Some units may be offered on one or more campuses or in more than one mode.

Unit availability

Students may choose units from the suite of 12-point units within the Master of Education program offered by the faculty as listed in the timetable for 2003. Advanced standing (credits/exemptions)

Applicants contemplating admission to this course may seek formal credit or recognition of prior learning. Applicants should apply for credit/RPL prior to enrolment. The Faculty of Education considers each application on its merit within the context of the faculty guidelines on credit transfer.
