Graduate Certificate in Business Law


Course code: 3187 + Course abbreviation: GradCertBusLaw + Course director: Professor Richard Cullen; deputy course director: Associate Professor Robin Edwards + Offered on-campus at Caulfield (some units may be offered at the Clayton campus) + Normally completed in one semester of full-time study or two semesters of part-time study

The certificate is a short course designed to provide a sound theoretical and practical knowledge in business law and to develop an understanding of and an ability to analyse a range of legal problems arising in the practice of business law. The course is of direct relevance to those involved in commerce, either as legal advisers, or in the private, commercial or government sectors. The course will enhance relevant skills for students seeking placements in legal commercial and governmental regulatory and compliance positions, especially in Australia and Asia.

Applicants require a pass degree or equivalent qualification. Applicants without a first degree who have at least six years appropriate employment experience should refer to the section on executive certificates. Candidates may be eligible for a maximum of two credit exemptions for units considered to be equivalent to particular units in the course of study and is restricted to study completed in the last five years. This is a fee-paying course. Candidates are referred to the Department of Business Law and Taxation as to the 2003 course fee. Course fees are set and reviewed annually and are therefore subject to change.
Students who successfully complete the Graduate Certificate in Business Law may apply for admission to the Master of Business Law (MBL) course.

Course structure

Students undertaking the Graduate Certificate in Business Law will be required to complete four units. Subject to meeting specified prerequisites, students will be able to choose the four units they are required to do from the full range of units available within the MBL course. Students who intend to articulate to the MBL after completing the Graduate Certificate in Business Law should choose up to two level 9 units and up to four level 4 units. Subject to meeting prerequisites where specified, students will also be able to choose up to four level 5 units.
