Course code: 3188 + Course abbreviation: ExecCertBusLaw + Course director: Professor Richard Cullen; deputy course director: Associate Professor Robin Edwards + Offered on-campus at Caulfield (some units may be offered at the Clayton campus) + Normally completed in one semester of full-time study or two semesters of part-time study
The certificate is a short course designed to provide a sound theoretical and practical knowledge in business law and to develop an understanding of and an ability to analyse a range of legal problems arising in the practice of business law. The course is of direct relevance to those involved in commerce, either as legal advisers, or in the private, commercial or government sectors. The course will enhance relevant skills for students seeking placements in legal commercial and governmental regulatory and compliance positions, especially in Australia and Asia.
Admission requirements, credit for work done previously and progression to further studies are as stated for executive certificates under the heading `The graduate program'.
Students undertaking the Executive Certificate in Business Law will be required to complete four units (normally four 9000-level units). Subject to meeting specified prerequisites, students will be able to choose the four units from the full range of 9000-level units available within the Master of Business Law (MBL) course.
With the approval of the course director, students who have completed two
9000-level units, with at least a credit average in those units, will be able
to undertake up to two 4000 or 5000-level units available within the MBL
course. In such cases, the student will be able to qualify for entry into the
MBL (provided they achieve an overall credit average in the executive
certificate) and they will be credited for all units they have completed.
With the approval of the course director, students will also be able to qualify
for entry into the MBL by completing four 9000-level units available within the
MBL course (provided an overall credit average is achieved). However, as the
MBL restricts students to completing no more than two 9000-level units,
students will be credited with only two 9000- level units completed for the
Executive Certificate in Business Law, towards the MBL.
Prospective students are directed to the entry for the Master of Business Law
for further details on units available.
