Master of Publishing and Editing (1.5-year program)

Synopsis

The publishing industry is a significant employer of tertiary-educated and otherwise highly skilled staff in the long-established book and magazine sectors, and now also the electronic publishing sector.

This postgraduate course is designed to provide editorial and publication management skills to those having aspirations to become involved in scholarly, commercial, educational, academic and corporate publishing, and/or to further their careers and attainments in publishing, or to establish their own small publishing business. The course provides an overview of Australian publishing and its international connections, both historical and contemporary, and a variety of vocationally oriented, special knowledge and skill based units.

Entry requirements

A Bachelors degree with a mimimum credit average in the final year or completion of the Faculty Certificate in
Publishing and Editing with a credit average

Exit Points

Students may apply to exit the program with a Graduate Diploma in Publishing and Editing having successfully completed 48 points including all level 4 core units. Students may apply to exit the program with the Graduate Certificate in Publishing and Editing having successfully completed 24 points including PUB4002 (note that PUB4002 is taught in first semester only). Students who have completed 24 points of publishing units apart from PUB4002 may apply to exit with a generic Graduate Certificate of Arts.

Course structure

The Masters is usually completed in eighteen months of full-time or up to three years part-time study. Students undertake approved units to the value of 48 points at fourth year level consisting of three core 12 pt units and a fourth core 12 pt unit or additional core fourth year six point unit and approved six point elective. To proceed to level 5 a credit average in level 4 units is required. To qualify for the Masters degree students complete an additional 24 points at Fifth Year consisting of one of two core 12 point units and two core six point units. Most classes in this course are taught in the Melbourne CBD.
