An honours degree in one or more arts or theological disciplines (results of H2A or above) or a masters qualifying with a research component in religion and theology (H2A or above both for the program overall and the research component).
This course is offered full-time over one-and-a-half years or part-time over three years. Students will choose two 12-point units from those offered at level five. At least one of RLM5100 (Religion in Australian society) or RLM5090 (The authority of the text) must be taken if not already taken at honours or for the masters qualifying. In addition, students will complete a thesis of 20,000 to 25,000 words.
The minimum pass grade for units in the Masters of Arts in Religion and Theology by coursework and research is 60 C, ie a grade of credit or above is required in every unit and for the thesis.

Candidates undertaking a 66 per cent research load will normally be required to enrol for all of the units in the coursework component on the Clayton campus and may then apply for transfer to external candidature.
