Research in development studies covers the ideas and debates which fall under the overarching term ´development'. Its focus is on contemporary concerns with the processes, theories and practices of globalisation and environmental sustainability in the international context. The faculty has identified the broad area of social, political and cultural change in the Asia- Pacific region as one of its research strengths. Development studies falls within this broad area. Projects undertaken in development studies typically extend across cultural, historical, ethnic, gender, politico- economic, postcolonial, national and regional boundaries. They explore important emergent issues and develop new interpretive models.
Supervision of PhD and masters candidature is available for research which relates to global production systems, foreign investment, devolution of governance, centralisation of geopolitical power, changing concepts of property in natural resource exploitation and management, poverty, ethnic minorities and political participation and representation.
