Candidates develop a research proposal that results in a body of creative or visual works with accompanying written and visual documentation. The documentation is a written and visual commentary that outlines the development of the project and its conclusion, and provides a critical context within which the work may be viewed and assessed. The normal length of the written commentary is between 10,000 and 20,000 words, with a photographic record of the visual or creative work being bound into the document. The documentation is not examined separately, but is considered together with the work and unites theory with practice.
Candidates undertake a sequence of two units which guide them through the discursive and documentary dimensions of their project:
Examination normally occurs through an exhibition of visual work. The works are new works that demonstrate a conclusion to the research to masters level. Works completed for other purposes, or before the candidacy, are not permitted for inclusion in the exhibition.
Applicants should hold an honours degree (minimum HIIA) or graduate/ postgraduate diploma of equivalent standard in an area appropriate to their research discipline from Monash University or an equivalent qualification from another tertiary institution or university approved by the faculty. Applications should be accompanied by 10-15 slides or photographic prints of recent original work, clearly numbered with a corresponding list of details attached.
In special circumstances, the faculty may admit to candidature an applicant who lacks all, or some, of the qualifications listed above but whose qualifications, publications (including exhibitions) and experience are considered by the faculty to be a suitable preparation for the proposed field of study. Such applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
