Master of Information Technology


General Information

Course code: 2402 + Gippsland campus + Australian residents - indicative annual fees: $16,000, or $2000 per six-point unit + International students - annual fees: $18,000 per year, or $2250 per unit + Course director: Dr Kai Ming Ting

Aims

The course provides a broad program in information technology, enabling students to select specific areas for in-depth study, or to construct a program from a range of suitably advanced units. It aims to provide the conceptual and theoretical framework in which students can appreciate and integrate new software and hardware technologies, and, within an information technology context, use them to develop solutions to complex problems. The course deepens students' theoretical knowledge in specific areas so that they will have the intellectual and conceptual foundation to play leading roles in the development of the information technology industry.

Entry requirements

A first degree which is recognised as equivalent to an Australian bachelors degree in computing or closely related disciplines.

Course structure

The course consists of 72 points of coursework units. The 72 points may include six or 12 points of individual project work or can comprise of 48 points of units plus a 24-point minor thesis. At least four units (24 points) must be taken from the following list:

Students may select not more than four postgraduate units with a maximum of two 9000-level units, offered by any faculty of Monash University, with approval from head of school or nominee. Detailed unit descriptions can be found at www.monash.edu.au/pubs/handbooks/postgrad.

Assessment

A combination of assignments and final examination for each unit. A pass is required in the final examination to pass the unit.

Advanced standing for previous study

Generally, students who have completed similar units in previous studies will normally be required to make substitutions. Credit will only be granted for postgraduate units that have not counted for the award of any other degree or diploma. Where credit is granted, the number of the elective units that may be taken outside the list of approved Information Technology postgraduate units may be reduced.

Completed applications

Completed applications are to be forwarded to the Student Services Officer, Gippsland School of Computing and Information Technology, Monash University, Churchill, Victoria 3842, by 27 September 2002 to be considered for a first-round offer. Applications received after that date but before 25 October 2002 will be considered for a second round of offers. Later applications may be considered if places are available.
