The Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary) is a part-time course aimed towards graduates who wish to teach in the secondary or similar educational environment.
The course is recognised by all Australian Education Departments, Catholic Education Offices and Private School Boards. (For Queensland, this course is recognised as the first year of the two years of postgraduate education studies required for registration as a teacher.)
The
entrance requirements for the Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary) course
are: (a) the applicant shall have qualified for a degree, and (b) the
units studied in that degree shall include a minimum two-year sequence in a
relevant tertiary discipline area for the method units to be studied in the
course. The discipline must be appropriate to the teaching method units offered
by the Faculty of Education on the Gippsland campus. A major sequence in one of
these units is desirable. Advice on the suitability of undergraduate sequences
or other information about the Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary) may be
obtained from the course coordinator.
For overseas degrees, the faculty accepts assessments made by The Employment
Assessment Centre, Department of Education, Employment and Training, GPO Box
4367, Melbourne, Victoria 3001, telephone (03) 9616 0989 (international +

Applications
should be made through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC), 40 Park
Street, South Melbourne, Victoria 3205 (telephone 1300 364133 or international
61 3 9954 3222), or visit the VTAC website at http://www.vtac.edu.au.
Applications must be submitted by 27 September 2002 (later applications will be
accepted on payment of a late fee).
Students are also required to provide a supplementary application form as part

Applications will not be processed without the application form.
If you have overseas qualifications, you are advised to submit your results to the Department of Education, Level 1, 33 St Andrews Place, East Melbourne, Victoria 3002. Telephone (03) 9637 2468 (international + 61 3 9637 2468), to obtain an assessment. Any inquiry should be made well in advance, as there is no guarantee assessments will be completed in time for them to be considered for a round-one offer. Any documentation you receive from the department should be forwarded to VTAC before 12 noon on 6 December 2002.
It
is desirable for students to have access to a personal computer (Windows or
Macintosh). Non-compulsory weekend schools may be offered in some units.
Applicants who completed their last qualification in a language other than
English will be required to provide a Certificate of English Competency.
If
you do not have a satisfactory result in English at Year 12 in Australia
(including applicants with overseas qualifications), or if you have not
received official exemption from the University Test of English as a Second
Language, you must enrol for this written test of reading, writing and
listening skills. If you fail to sit the test, you will not be considered for
selection.

include evidence of your English proficiency. Please note that attendance at
English courses may not be regarded as adequate evidence. However, results on
nationally or internationally recognised tests such as TOEFL and TWE, the
IELTS, and ASLPRs can be presented. If your secondary education occurred in
full English medium in another state or country, please advise Ms Rosemary

The Language Testing Research Centre conducts the test at the University of
Melbourne. Testing will take place on a Saturday in late October or a Saturday
in early December. For information about the test and for a registration form,
contact the Language Testing Research Centre on telephone (03) 8344 4389, fax
(03) 8344 5163. A copy of results will be forwarded to the applicant and the
institution of each course preference, unless otherwise requested. Results are
generally available within two weeks of the test administration.
The course comprises 48 points of study. Students are required to complete 8 units (four units of which two will be sets of teaching methods ie, A and B sequence = method set) over two-years of part-time study by off-campus learning.
As well as
completing the eight units, students must successfully complete 10 weeks of
supervised school experience (25 days over five consecutive weeks in year 1 and
25 days over five consecutive weeks in year 2). This requirement forms an
essential part of the teaching method units. Students who are employed in
schools are required to do 50 days practicum. They must complete 25 days of
supervised practicum in a setting other than the school in which they are
employed.

Teaching method units are offered in the following areas:

When completing a VTAC application form 2003, students must enter either two single methods (eg English and SOSE; maths and SOSE; maths and science), or a double method (eg double music; or visual arts) where double methods are offered. Enrolment in methods requires a major or sub-major in the discipline (eg a major in English or maths as appropriate). It is possible that all these methods may not be available in a given year.
Assessment is by way of a combination of tasks, which may include examinations, assignments and other set tasks.
The Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary) is equivalent to one year of full-time study (48 credit points). It is offered as a part-time course and is normally completed over two years. The expected number of hours per week for a part-time student is 24.
Credit may be granted for equivalent study of a Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary) at another tertiary institution. Applicants should apply for credit/RPL prior to enrolment in the course. The Faculty of Education considers each application on its merit within the context of the faculty guidelines on credit transfer.
