General Information

Course code: 1766 + Gippsland campus + Full-fee-paying course: unit fee $1650; course fee $5200 (2002 fee) + International student unit fee: $1750; course fee $7000 (2002 fee) + Attendance not required

Aims

The graduate certificate has been designed to provide graduates in banks and non-bank financial institutions with intensive training in banking and finance units. The certificate is only available through off-campus learning mode.

Professional recognition

As this course is primarily designed to allow graduates in the banking and finance industries to satisfy the educational requirements for entry to senior associate status with the Australasian Institute of Banking and Finance, applicants should approach that organisation to obtain clear guidance - given their educational background and experience - of the units to be selected to achieve this purpose. Some students may be able to satisfy these requirements by completing the certificate. Other students may need to advance to the diploma upon completion of the certificate.

Entry requirements

An applicant for admission to candidature must have a pass degree or equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution.

Intake

Applicants should note that there are two intakes per year to this course, one to commence in first semester and the second to commence in second semester.

Special requirements

PC requirement

Access to an IBM-compatible computer is essential for the use of word processing and other software packages. It is also recommended that off-campus learning students have access to a modem to facilitate email communication with teaching staff and access to web-based teaching material.

Course structure

The Graduate Certificate of Business (Banking) is offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics - Gippsland and consists of the following four units, normally taken over one year of study.

Year one
First semester
Second semester

Many students will need to take a unit in either management or marketing as their elective to satisfy the professional requirements within the framework of the certificate.

Assessment

Assessment is by a combination of assignments and final examination for each unit. Generally, a pass is required in the final examination to pass the unit.

Advanced standing for previous study

Applicants who have completed graduate-level units at a recognised tertiary institution, within the last five years, which are similar in content to a unit forming part of the course of study may apply for a credit exemption to a maximum of 50 per cent of the course.
