Program code: 2059 + Clayton campus + Program fee: local students $3500; international students (off-campus learning only) $A7100 pa (full-time) or $A3550 pa (part-time) + Stream: Applied Linguistics + This program is currently offered only in off-campus learning mode (except for ALM4150 if taken on campus)
This
program offers students without a degree but with extensive professional
experience in relevant areas an exposure to the key ideas of linguistics so as
to prepare them for continuing studies. The program aims to meet in part the
needs of people wishing to apply linguistics in various professional fields; it
focuses upon the central aspects of the discipline and aims at developing
students' basic knowledge and skills in these areas. The broad teaching and
learning objectives of this certificate require students to acquire a
preliminary knowledge of the basic sub-disciplines of linguistics.
Upon successful completion of this program, students should have an
understanding of the basic theoretical concepts, and approaches of the
discipline and have gained experience in the use of analytic and research
techniques.
Applicants should have either a pass bachelors degree or, more usually, five years experience in teaching (of a related unit), translating/interpreting, journalism, etc at a senior level. Applicants who seek to be admitted on the basis of professional experience must supply:
At present, the only special requirement is that students will need access to an audiotape playback facility. However, we are increasingly moving into multimedia teaching, and it is highly recommended that students acquire email accessibility.
The
program requires the completion of two 12-point fourth-year units (24 points in
total)
Students will normally take: (i) ALM4110 (General linguistics), (ii) ALM4120
(Applied linguistics); or one of these two units and one other fourth-year
postgraduate unit offered in the Linguistics department, normally either
ALM4130 (Language and society) or ALM4150 (Research design in applied
linguistics). This last unit is also available on campus. The program will
normally be completed in one semester full-time or one year part-time.
There are no examinations in this program. All units consist of continuous assessment, which may include a take-home test.
Credit will not normally be granted into the faculty certificate, unless the applicant has completed one or more of the units listed under the faculty certificate but has not taken out an award or a degree for the unit(s) in another program. Exemptions without credit will not normally be granted either. This program articulates with the postgraduate diploma, and students will receive full credit towards the diploma for the faculty certificate units they have completed as long as they have a credit average across the two units.
