To provide education for students which will result in their having an ability to undertake independent creative work in an area of studio in which they have already majored at undergraduate level; being able to relate their visual arts practice to historical or contemporary discourses; being able to appreciate and cultivate a relationship between technical excellence and the conceptual aspirations of the discipline; having the ability to achieve coherence and integrity in their visual work; and being able to subject the results of their visual production to the scrutiny of critical review and derive opportunities for progress and further achievement from this.
Applicants should hold a three-year pass degree in art or design from Monash University or an equivalent qualification from another tertiary institution or university approved by the faculty. Applicants must be able to demonstrate a high level of capability in their chosen studio discipline. Note that all applications must be accompanied by 10 to 15 slides or photographic prints of recent original work clearly numbered with a corresponding list of details attached.
Up to 24 credit points may be granted for successful completion of a further year of art or design studies beyond the pass degree.
Students
enrol in the Master of Visual Arts. The program can be exited after one or two
semesters of full-time study, or the equivalent.
Students exiting after successfully completing one semester of study (24
points) take out the Graduate Certificate in Visual Arts. Students exiting
after successfully completing two semesters of study (48 points) take out the
Graduate Diploma of Visual Arts.
The course consists of three studio units:
plus two units of contextual, critical, or
theoretical studies which complement the studio units, to a total of 72 credit
points.
In full-time mode, the units MVA4001 and MVA4002 plus two complementary units
are taken in the first two semesters. The unit MVA5001 is taken in the third
semester of full-time enrolment.
Students take two units of contextual, critical or theoretical units to complement and support their studio work. These units are chosen with the advice and approval of the course coordinator and take into consideration knowledge gaps and identified needs of individual students.

One-and-a-half years of full-time study (three semesters), or three years of part-time study (six semesters).
Several assessment methods are used during the course including written assignments, submission of studio work and seminar presentations. Some units will be assessed by a panel.
