Bachelor of Medical Science

General information

Course abbreviation: BMedSc + Course code: 0041
The Bachelor of Medical Science provides students with an opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of an aspect of medical science and to pursue the study of this field through research.

Admission

Selected students may be permitted at the end of the third, fourth or fifth year of the present six-year Monash MB BS course to take leave from the medical course to pursue special studies in a unit area offered by the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences in order to qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Medical Science (BMedSc). During the 12-month period, students will undertake research activities supervised through a department of the faculty and complete a minor thesis. Students resume the MB BS course after completion of the BMedSc year. The BMedSc degree is normally awarded at honours standard only.
An applicant for admission to candidature should have a good overall academic record and, in addition, as a condition of entry, have achieved a credit grade in the area in which BMedSc studies are to be taken. An applicant with less than a credit may also be admitted to candidature if there are circumstances considered special by the faculty. Students admitted to this course are eligible to apply for a scholarship for the duration of the course.

Assessment

Assessment procedures generally consist of approximately 70 per cent awarded for thesis evaluation and 30 per cent for seminars, examinations, essays and continuous assessment. Minor variations to these relative weightings may occur in different departments.

Regulations

Students should note that degree regulations are the formal prescription of the requirements to complete a degree and it is the student's responsibility to ensure that the requirements are understood.
