Prerequisites

Berwick, Gippsland and Peninsula

For Berwick, Gippsland and Peninsula courses, students require VCE English (any) with a study score of at least 25, plus two units from General Mathematics and Mathematical Methods at units 1 and 2 level.

Caulfield

For courses at Caulfield, a study score of at least 25 in both VCE English (any) and mathematics (any), and a study score of at least 20 in any two other VCE studies.

Clayton

Courses at the Clayton campus require a study score of at least 25 in VCE English (any) and either Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics, and a study score of at least 20 in any two other VCE studies.

Monash University Malaysia

Students require English (any) units 3 and 4 with a study score of at least 25, plus two units from General Mathematics and Mathematical Methods at units 1 and 2 level.

Monash South Africa

The Bachelor of Business and Commerce at South Africa requires a total of 44 points for the South African Senior School Certificate, with satisfactory scores in English and Mathematics.

Bachelors degrees

The diversity within the faculty is reflected in the range of undergraduate courses offered. Bachelors degrees that can be undertaken in the faculty are set out in Table 1.

Some similarities and differences exist in these bachelor courses. Guidance is frequently sought on course selection. The following information may be helpful.

Similarities between the bachelor degree courses

• Students in all courses are eligible for Awards for Excellence.
• Selected students who achieve excellent results in their first three years of study have the opportunity to undertake an honours degree.
• All include a general multidisciplinary introduction to the course over the first and part of the second year and major sequences are available in one or two disciplines during the second and third years.
• All students are provided with the skills to understand and analyse the commercial environment and with experiences to enable them to embark on an interesting and productive career over a lifetime.
• All courses have a similar core of six compulsory units that will aid transfer between programs after one year.

Differences between the bachelor degree courses

• The specialist discipline Bachelor of Business degrees offered at the Caulfield campus provide a general multidiscipline business base of compulsory units while also focusing on a particular specialisation or discipline area. Courses are structured in accordance with the requirements of the specialised discipline major.
• The generalist degrees, Bachelor of Business and Commerce, Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Economics, provide a base of six compulsory units and allow students considerable flexibility in their choice of specialisation or discipline major. The courses provide a range of specific disciplines and a student's choice of major study may be made at the end of the first year of study. For example, in the Bachelor of Economics one-third of the units can be electives and one of the two majors can be taken from any other faculty.
• The specialist discipline Bachelor of Commerce degrees offered at Clayton allow more units to be studied within the specified discipline area, but otherwise allow the flexibility of final choice available in the generalist degree.
• While all seven campuses teach their courses in the on-campus study mode, some courses are also offered by off-campus distributed learning and the Bachelor of Business Studies is offered through Open Learning Australia. Undergraduate students on the Berwick, Clayton, Peninsula and Monash Malaysia campuses are almost entirely school-leavers with the majority studying full-time. The Caulfield campus enrolments include part-time students and the campus also offers evening classes. More than 70 per cent of the students enrolled at the Gippsland campus are studying by off-campus distributed learning.

Double degrees

The double-degree programs offered by this faculty and by other faculties of the university are shown in Table 3. A candidate for any of the double-degree programs listed shall be bound by the regulations for the degree from this faculty and, for interfaculty programs, the regulations for the degree offered by the other faculty. During the course of study, a candidate may elect to continue studies for one degree only. In this event, the candidate shall discontinue studies for one degree and with the approval of the faculty board which administers the degree to be continued, he or she shall complete the course of study for the other degree in accordance with any conditions or requirements and within the time period specified and approved by that faculty board.

Where students meet the entry and course requirements for each degree, they can, if admitted to the second degree course, complete it with a minimum of the equivalent of one additional year's full-time study.
The Bachelor of Economics allows significant flexibility in the choice of units from other disciplines or faculties, so by appropriate choice of units a second degree in arts, science or computing and also commerce can be completed after the equivalent of a further year's full-time study.
Students undertaking any of the Bachelor of Business degrees with a specified major have the opportunity to take out a second business degree in another specialisation with the completion of a minimum of eight additional units in one year's further study.
