A
major can normally be studied from a faculty other than Arts. The faculties
offering units that are of interest to arts students include Art and Design,
Business and Economics, Information Technology, Education, Law, Science and
Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. Students should refer to individual
faculty sections in this handbook to obtain detailed information on the choices
available and consult with the particular faculty office regarding issues to do
with unit prerequisites and unit quotas.
The Faculty of Arts offers double-degree programs with most other faculties of
the university. These degrees are of particular interest to students who wish
to pursue disciplines from different faculties.
Areas
of study include education studies, teaching and curriculum studies, studies of
society and environment, science health, and physical education.
Further information may be obtained by referring to the Faculty of Education,
or from the administrative officer, Peninsula campus (telephone (03) 9904

Currently, subject to a quota in LAW1100 (Legal process), students may complete a minor sequence in units from the Faculty of Law and, in addition, may complete further specified law units to the value of 24 credit points at third-year level, provided such units are credited to and required for the Bachelor of Arts. The Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Law offer a double degree.
The Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences offers units of interest to arts students, particularly in the areas of psychology, anatomy, biochemistry and physiology.
The Faculty of Science offers a wide range of units in disciplines of interest to arts students. Refer to Science faculty section for details.
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers units to students in the Faculty of Arts as part of the free points that students may take towards the Bachelor of Arts across a broad range of areas of theoretical and applied mathematics, including mathematical statistics, astronomy and atmospheric science. Some units have no prerequisite of studies in mathematics at VCE level. The applied statistics sequence has been developed to meet the needs of students studying in various areas such as psychology, sociology, geography and environmental science and others for which skills in the quantitative analysis of data are required. The units emphasise practical applications and incorporate the use of statistical computing packages, eg SPSS, BMDP, Minitab etc. No computing knowledge is assumed of students prior to entry into first year.
Astronomy offers two first-year units that are available to Faculty of Arts students -- ASP1010 and ASP1020.
