The Master of Education (LOTE) is designed to accommodate teachers who wish to
upgrade their professional practice in their LOTE classes and educators who
wish to use these pathways as a basis for detailed research in bilingual or
second language education.
Candidates
will usually hold an approved degree or equivalent qualification from a
recognised tertiary institution or an approved post-Year 12 major (or approved
equivalent) in a language other than English, have demonstrated proficiency in
the language and hold a recognised teaching qualification. Prior to enrolment,
all students must have their proposed course approved by the LOTE program
coordinator.
Note that teachers who wish to upgrade their qualifications to be
eligible for a teaching position in their LOTE need to have completed the
language requirement prior to entering the course. Those who have only one LOTE
unit to complete may seek permission of the course coordinator to undertake
this as part of the postgraduate diploma.
Students who are not qualified LOTE teachers may be required to complete
designated units in LOTE methodology and practice.

NOTE THAT EDF6224 IS MANDATORY FOR THOSE TEACHERS WISHING TO BE FULLY QUALIFIED FOR EMPLOYMENT WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, EMPLOYMENT AND TRAINING AND WHO HAVE NOT ALREADY COMPLETED LOTE DIPED. QUALIFIED LOTE TEACHERS MUST CHOOSE ANOTHER POSTGRADUATE UNIT RELEVANT TO THE COURSE AS APPROVED BY THE POSTGRADUATE COORDINATOR.
The
research core unit is a corequisite for the research thesis. It may be taken
concurrently with the research thesis or completed prior to the commencement of
the research thesis.
This is a conceptual outline only. It gives a general indication of how the
course will progress and is subject to change without notice. Students should
also consult their course coordinator to assist in planning their program.
The Master of Education (LOTE) may be taken either full-time or part-time. It is expected that full-time candidates will complete all requirements within 18 months (three semesters) while part-time candidates should complete all requirements within three years. The expected number of study hours per week for a full-time student is 48.
