This course is designed to prepare graduates from a range of disciplines for
eligibility for employment as primary school teachers in the government,
Catholic and independent school systems. Students should form a broad
conceptual understanding of the field of education and will be expected to
engage as active participants in both on-campus and off-campus components of
the course.
The
minimum entry requirement is an approved degree. For overseas degrees, the
faculty accepts assessments made by the Department of Education, Employment and
Training, Level 1, 33 St Andrews Place, East Melbourne, Victoria 3002.

Applications are made through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC),
telephone 1300 364 133 (except for international students who apply through
Monash International). Application forms are available in the VTAC guide, which
can be obtained from Victorian newsagents from August, or via the VTAC website
at http://www.vtac.edu.au Applications should be submitted to
VTAC by the end of September (later applications may be accepted on payment of
a late fee).
If
you do not have a satisfactory result in English at Year 12 in Australia
(including applicants with overseas qualifications), or if you have not
received official exemption from the University Test of English as a Second
Language, you must enrol for this written test of reading, writing and
listening skills. If you fail to sit the test, you will not be considered for
selection.
Applications for exemption should be addressed in writing to Ms Rosemary Viete,

include evidence of your English proficiency. Please note that attendance at
English courses may not be regarded as adequate evidence. However, results on
nationally or internationally recognised tests such as TOEFL and TWE, the
IELTS, and ASLPRs can be presented. If your secondary education occurred in
full English medium in another state or country, please advise Ms Rosemary

The Language Testing Research Centre conducts the test at the University of
Melbourne. Testing will take place on a Saturday in late October or a Saturday
in early December. For information about the test and for a registration form,
contact the Language Testing Research Centre on telephone (03) 8344 4389, fax
(03) 8344 5163. A copy of results will be forwarded to the applicant and the
institution of each course preference, unless otherwise requested. Results are
generally available within two weeks of the test administration.
The Graduate Diploma of Education (Primary) consists of eight on-campus units which are linked with four school experience rounds arranged throughout the course. Students will be in schools for a total of up to 60 days, comprising 45 days of fully supervised practicum and 15 days of related fieldwork. Candidates must satisfactorily complete each of the eight units of study and receive a satisfactory teaching assessment to be eligible for the award:

Students
must normally be available to undertake their practicum placement on a
full-time basis.
Students who are employed in schools who are required to do 60 days practicum
must complete at least 30 days of supervised practicum in a setting other than
the school where they are employed.
This course consists of one year of full-time study taken on-campus. The expected number of hours per week for a full-time student is 48.
