The Master of Music is designed for musicians to develop a greater knowledge,
understanding and competence in music performance. Candidates will develop
specific vocational outcomes in music performance as well as in one or more of
the following fields; musicology, ethnomusicology and world music, composition,
music education and pedagogy, contemporary m music and Australian music. In
addition, candidates will acquire a range of research methods and techniques
specific to music. They will develop the capacity for informed musical
performance. Performance opportunities exist in instrumental, vocal and
conducting areas.
A bachelors degree in any discipline with at least a credit average in the final year, or a Bachelors pass degree with demonstrable professional experience at senior level in music or a music-related discipline. Such applicants will need to supply a CV, a 1000-word statement and names of two professional referees. In addition applicants are required to pass an audition (audition fee applies). Auditions take place in May and November each year. In the case of overseas students, a video recording of a performance will be accepted for consideration of entry in lieu of an audition. However, the video must be recorded in one session, be uncut, and be accompanied by a statutory declaration. All students must meet the Faculty's English proficiency requirements.
At level four, students complete the core unit, MUM4960 (Chief practical study I). In addition, students complete three elective units totalling 36 points from the following:
