Master of Forensic Medicine


Course code 3412 + Victoria Institute of Forensic Medicine, Southbank + Full-fee-paying course: $14,400 (Australian residents); $19,350 (international students)

Aims

The Department of Forensic Medicine offers this course on a part-time basis over three or four years by off-campus distributed learning. The broad aims of the course are: to assist in the establishment of academic standards in clinical forensic medical practice; to produce graduates who have a sound knowledge of medico-legal principles; and to develop practitioners' skills in providing clinical forensic services in the community. It substantially follows and further develops the structure already created for the Graduate Diploma in Forensic Medicine.

Professional recognition

The course is recognised by the College of General Practitioners.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have a medical degree or equivalent and have at least three years experience in clinical medicine and be currently working in a field of forensic medicine.

Course structure

The masters program will be offered in two streams. The aim of the program is to provide students with an opportunity to extend their knowledge in forensic medicine through a structured program of coursework and to develop research skills in the area. A total of 72 credit points is required to complete this masters program. Students are required to complete three core units and at least one elective unit from the list of units offered by the Department of Forensic Medicine.

Minor thesis

Students undertaking the minor thesis are required to prepare a research proposal at an early stage of their minor thesis enrolment and have this approved by their thesis supervisor. The area of research must cover a topic directly related to forensic medicine. The minor thesis attracts 24 credit points.

Coursework only

Students must complete 72 points of study comprised entirely of course work units. At least 40 points of study must be taken from the list of units offered by the Department of Forensic Medicine or other graduate units offered by faculties at Monash University or other tertiary institutions. At least one unit must include instruction on research methodologies and basic statistics. Up to eight credit points of study may be taken as a short project.

Assessment

Assessment will vary but will include coursework participation, formal assignments, casebooks and minor thesis.

Advanced standing for previous study

Advanced standing (up to a maximum of 50 per cent) may be granted for previous work completed in the Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate in Forensic Medicine.
