This course caters for radiographers currently practising sonography without formal qualifications who wish to gain a formal academic qualification in ultrasound. The course will encourage students to develop a sound knowledge and understanding of embryology, anatomy, pathophysiology, microbiology and genetics as well as a solid foundation in ultrasound methodology. In collaboration with the faculties of Science and Law, students will receive a rigorous introduction to the physical principles of ultrasound, digital image processing and advanced reconstruction techniques. This collaborative approach enables the teaching of ethics, medico-legal principles, infection control, communication and the principles of history-taking to be appropriately contextualised in relation to the practice of ultrasound.
Applicants will generally be graduates of a degree program in radiography and medical imaging or equivalent, who have a minimum of 12 months postgraduation experience and have attained their Statement of Accreditation of the Australian Institute of Radiography. The Department of Radiography and Medical Imaging will individually assess applicants holding other qualifications.
This course consists of eight units that are completed over a minimum of two years part-time study (four 18-week semesters). From 2002, the course will be offered full-time over one year (four 24-week semesters).
Advanced standing may be granted for the core units where the student supplies documentary evidence of successfully completing a similar unit at a similar level elsewhere, within the last seven years. Any candidate may, with the approval of the course coordinator and the faculty, be granted credit for up to 50 per cent of their course. All advanced standing applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis.
