Master of Counselling

Target group

The Master of Counselling degree prepares graduates to practise as counselling psychologists in a range of settings including hospitals, community centres, schools, tertiary institutions, private practices, industry, health-oriented facilities and other similar places. For more detailed information regarding the role and employment prospects of counselling psychologists, students should consult the College of Counselling Psychologists, Australian Psychological Society.

Admission requirements

Two streams will be offered for admission to the Master of Counselling program.

Entry requirements - Stream A:

Four years of approved study in psychology. Students may be eligible to apply for articulation into the Master of Psychology (Counselling) degree on the successful completion of the two semester one units, EDF6501 Counselling: theory and practice, and EDF6502 Advanced psychological assessment.

Entry requirements - Stream B:

Three years of approved study in psychology, with a minimum of two years relevant work experience or approved fourth year study. This stream does not articulate into the Master of Psychology (Counselling) degree. Students will be advised at the time of offer of the stream for which they are eligible. Selection into the program will be based on:

  1. qualifications
  2. academic merit
  3. referee reports and/or
  4. interviews

English Language proficiency requirements

All students must fulfil one of the following English language proficiency requirements:

  1. The student has passed secondary studies which were conducted entirely in English medium.
  2. The student has passed tertiary studies of three years or more which were conducted entirely in English medium.
  3. Student has achieved a score of no less than 577 on the TOEFL and 4.5-5.0 on the TWE, or 233 on the computer based TOEFL tests.
  4. Student has achieved a score of no less than 6.5 (no individual skill score below 6.0) on the IELTS
  5. Student has been rated as 3+ on the ASLPRs for all skills.

Course outline

The program consists of four advanced coursework units comprising the following 12-point units:

EDF6501 Counselling: theory and practice
EDF6502 Advanced psychological assessment
EDF6503 Ethical, clinical and professional practice in counselling psychology

Plus one unit chosen from following electives:

EDF6517 Advanced counselling,
EDF6512 Clinical behaviour therapy
Stream B - off campus
Core units
EDF6501 Counselling: theory and practice
EDF6503 Ethical, clinical and professional practice in counselling psychology
EDF6517 Advanced counselling,

Length of course/workload required

The Master of Counselling may be taken only part-time. It is expected that the part-time candidates should complete all requirements within two years (four semesters). The expected number of study hours per week for a part-time student is 24.

Credits/exemptions

Applicants contemplating admission to this course may seek formal credit or recognition of prior learning. Applicants should apply for credit/RPL prior to enrolment. The Faculty of Education considers each application on its merit within the context of the faculty guidelines on credit transfer.
