Bachelor of Business (Risk Management)


Course code: 3158 + Caulfield campus + HECS fees applicable + No attendance required
International students (non-Australian citizens and residents) may apply for entry on a full-fee-paying basis. The annual fee based on a part-time load for an international student is approximately $1688 (AUD) per unit.
Local students (Australian citizens and residents) may also apply for entry on a full-fee-paying basis. The annual fee based on a part-time load is $1531 (AUD) per unit. These costs are subject to change - please check with enrolment officer.

Aims

The Australasian Risk Management Unit offers people who are unable to attend formal tertiary institutions the opportunity of undertaking this highly sought-after degree by off-campus distributed learning.
This new tagged degree is designed to provide a degree structure with a major sequence of units in the area of risk management. It recognises the fundamental importance of risk management in today's commercial world and seeks to provide graduates with extended skills in these areas. It will also prepare them for the range of increasingly complex risk management issues they will face when employed in many areas of business and in government agencies.
The Bachelor of Business (Risk Management) provides a well-targeted, relevant course designed to meet the real-world needs of students and a wide-range of potential employers.
On completion of this course, students will:

Professional recognition

This degree satisfies the educational requirements for associate fellow status with the Australian Institute of Risk Management.

Entry requirements

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)

An applicant for admission to candidature requires a study score of at least 25 in both VCE English (any) and mathematics (any), and a study score of at least 20 in any two other VCE studies.

Comparable qualifications

Applicants may also satisfy entry requirements with qualifications equivalent to the VCE, eg TAFE qualifications (the first year of a TAFE Advanced Diploma (formerly Associate Diploma or equivalent TAFE qualifications) or comparable Year 12 qualifications, including International Baccalaureate, or other approved tertiary study.

Special entry - mature age

Applications are also invited from mature-age applicants who, although they may not hold the required Year 12 qualification, may meet entry requirements by undertaking prior studies on a single unit basis.

Special requirements

Selection

This program is generally open to applicants, except in exceptional circumstances, who have reached the age of 23 and over by 1 January in the year of possible commencement. To successfully complete the units to a high standard, it is becoming increasingly essential to have access to a computer (at least a Pentium 166 with Windows 95 or later), as a portion of the learning is via interactive tutorial disks. Students in second year undertaking ETX1100B (Business statistics) will need to have access to an IBM-compatible computer and the spreadsheet package EXCEL (version 97 or above) and will require a calculator, preferably one with statistical keys.

Course structure

The course is offered on a part-time basis only and is of six years duration by off-campus distributed learning. Students are expected to undertake two units per semester and pass the equivalent of 24 semester units to be awarded the degree. Each semester is of 13 weeks' duration.

Electives

In addition to the above 18 units in the 144-point program, students must choose six electives from any discipline within any faculty, subject to approval from other faculties. The number of first-year-level units must not exceed 10 (60 credit points). A minimum of six third-year-level units (36 credit points), of which at least four must be from those offered by the faculty on the campus delivering this program. At least two (12 credit points) of the free electives must be taken outside the main field of study.

Assessment

Assessment is by a combination of assignments and final examination for each unit. Examination weighting ranges from 60 per cent to 70 per cent and generally a pass is required in the final examination to pass the unit.
