The Master of Arts in applied linguistics deals with applications of linguistics to professional and social contexts in which language plays a crucial role. Present offerings are particularly suited to teachers of English as a mother tongue, as a second or foreign language, to teachers of languages other than English, to generalist primary school teachers, to language advisers, language consultants, and those concerned with multicultural and language policies. People working in the media (advertising/journalism), in business/industry as well as in the service professions (health, law, social work) would also find this course useful as some units deal with applications of linguistics relevant to the media, the workplace and the professions.
Applicants should hold a BA(Hons) in linguistics (H2C or above) or the Postgraduate Diploma of Arts (Applied Linguistics) or Masters Qualifying in Applied Linguistics or equivalent, with results at credit standard, or above.
At present, the only special requirement is that students will need access to an audiotape playback facility. However, we are increasingly moving into multimedia teaching, and it is highly recommended that students acquire email accessibility.
Studying
full-time (two units per semester) students should qualify for the Master of
Arts in one year. Studying part-time (one unit per semester) students could
qualify for the Master of Arts in two years.

To
qualify for the degree of Master of Arts at Monash University, students will
need to achieve a grade of credit (60 C) or above in all units.
The Master of Arts by Coursework degree may facilitate entry to the PhD program
at Monash University. While the usual route to a PhD is through an honours
program or masters by research, students who have completed a masters by
coursework, including a substantial research component, or who have other
research experience, may apply for the PhD program. Intending applicants
interested in this possibility or masters by research should contact the
department for further information.
There are no examinations in this program. All units consist of continuous assessment, which may include a take-home test.
Students who have completed relevant units at fifth-year (postgraduate)-level with grades of distinction or above may apply for a maximum of 50 per cent credit. Credit cannot be obtained for units that were part of a course for which a degree or an award of any kind has been taken out.
