This is a brief reference list only. More detailed information is provided with post-enrolment mailouts. In mid-January, students are sent an information package. This includes tips for surviving study and contact details as well as information about specialist student support services, how to submit assignments, general administrative matters, and weekend and residential schools.
While you are a student at Monash University, you will have at least two computer accounts that you may use to access IT facilities and electronics services - a Novell account and an Authcate account. These accounts will last for the course of your studies and remain active while you are a fully enrolled student. Your Novell account allows you to use the PCs in the computer laboratories on-campus and access software on Monash servers. Your Authcate account enables you to access the pages on the Monash website and other Monash resources that are protected by a password, eg examination results, re-enrolment, library resources, Monash email and much more.
Student counsellors assist with concerns related to returning to study and provide a careers counselling service.
Confidential assistance and support is available for people with disabilities. Assistance includes alternative assessment arrangements, enlarged photocopying etc. You are encouraged to contact the disability liaison officer early in your studies.
A number of student support officers are available to help with any queries or problems regarding a student's off-campus distributed learning studies. A toll-free number is available for student use.
Monash
University Library, through its Flexible Library Services Unit, provides a wide
range of services to off-campus distributed learning students. Books and
photocopies of book chapters or photocopy articles will be posted directly from
the campus libraries holding these materials. The Flexible Library Services
staff can also assist students to find information for assignments or answer
reference or other queries.
Students can use the library's computer catalogue, CD-ROM databases and other
library electronic resources through the Flexible Library Services website.
This site contains an electronic book and photocopy request form and past
examination papers. The site also has links to Monash campus libraries and
provides information on university libraries throughout Australia that can
provide borrowing privileges.
Requests for books, journal articles and information can be made via email, fax
or telephone to the Flexible Library Services request centre. More information
on library services can be found in the library guide for off-campus
distributed learning students and other library pamphlets. This information is
also detailed in the Flexible Library Services website.
Students can also borrow books, do their own photocopying and use CD-ROM and
other electronic services when they visit our campus libraries. However,
off-campus library services are only available via Flexible Library Services.
Flexible Library Services are available through the Flexible Library website at
http://www.lib.monash.edu.au/flisu, by email at
flisu@lib.monash.edu.au, by telephone on (03) 5122 6313 (or from
Melbourne on 9902 6313, or outside the Melbourne area on 1800 331194), or by
fax on (03) 5122 6882 (or from Melbourne on 9902 6882).
In Queensland, an agreement between Monash and the Queensland Open Learning Network enables students to use the network's centres. In Western Australia, a similar agreement enables students to use the WA Telecentre Network centres, and in New South Wales students can access the ET Australia Centre located in Gosford.
A short video, Getting Started, is available for newly enrolled students to borrow. The video provides an introduction to the services and resources available to off-campus students and includes interviews with students about their experiences of studying off-campus.
An adviser is available to assist with Austudy applications, eligibility queries and appeals, student loans and general financial issues.
The student union on each campus provides cultural, social and recreational programs for all students and representation for students within the university. At the first weekend school at the Gippsland campus, the Monash University Gippsland Student Union (MUGSU) conducts orientation and return to study activities. MUGSU also provides services for students attending weekend and residential schools at other Monash campuses.
